KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Ahead of the Christmas holiday, people are being reminded to be careful in the kitchen. Mike McLeieer, with the fire prevention group ESCAPE, says that the message this year is "Stand by Your Pan."
A big part of McLeieer's advice involves not letting children get close to whatever's cooking. He says it's a good idea to make sure no kids get closer than three feet to the stove, and suggests marking the area off somehow, noting that only an unmedicated adult who's not consumed alcohol should be allowed to work in the kitchen
McLeieer also notes that more than 250 structure fires are caused each year by Christmas trees. He says the biggest dangers with the trees is having a heat source too close to them, and using candles to decorate them.
