Police call landline bill threat to safety

LANSING (WKZO) -- Police are the latest to step forward in opposition to a bill before the state House to allow phone companies to end landline service.

The AARP has already voiced its opposition, and Michigan Association Chiefs of Police executive director Robert Stevenson called landlines "a matter of life and death" at a Monday press conference.  The bill sailed through the Senate with minimal opposition last week and could be taken up by the House soon.

Police warn cell phone and Voice-Over-IP technology isn't as reliable as a landline, particularly in rural areas.  A spokesperson for AT&T has previously stated that many lines have already been turned over to newer systems, with many customers unaware of any changes in their service.
