SOUTH HAVEN (WKZO) -- PETA says that its Compassionate Responders Award will be given to South Haven Area Emergency Services for its rescue of a dog that had fallen through the ice on a pond near Eighth Avenue in Geneva Township on Sunday.
When responders arrived, they found the dog to be about 150 feet offshore and crying out for help as it struggled to stay above water. The crew put on special ice rescue suits to reach the animal, which has since been returned to its family and is doing fine. PETA says that the dog broke free of its tether and wandered about a mile from home, and it urges people all dog guardians not to keep their animals chained in the backyard.
South Haven Area Emergency Services will receive a framed certificate, a letter of recognition, and a box of vegan chocolates.
