Ice and speed get the blame for a crash that kills two school children from Otsego

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Grief councilors are on hand this morning at the Heritage Christian Academy in Kalamazoo to help students and staff cope with the death of two students from the school.

17-year-old Anneka Vels and her 13-year- old brother, Landon where killed when their mini-van slid off G Avenue and slammed into a large tree yesterday morning, and burst into flames.

Linda Weston, who lives nearby says her husband and a neighbor tried to rescue the two teens, but they were beaten back by the smoke and flames.

They were traveling from their home in Otsego to the School in Kalamazoo.

Sheriff’s Deputies are blaming an icy road surface and speed for the crash.

Family and friends held a prayer vigil last night for the two children.
