Weekend Kalamazoo shooting victim identified

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Authorities have released more information about a fatal shooting over the weekend.

Kalamazoo Township Police received a 911 call around 12:20 a.m. Saturday about a man shot in the 3500-block of Market Street that was being taken by a private vehicle to Borgess Hospital.  Twenty-four-year-old U.S. Army Sergeant Kyle Lawrence McGrail of North Charleston, South Carolina, originally from Kalamazoo, had suffered a gunshot wound to the head.

Officers on the scene for an unrelated matter were present when a Ford F-250 Super Duty truck arrived at the Borgess emergency room.  Others in the vehicle told officers McGrail had been handling the gun in the vehicle on Market Street when he shot himself.

McGrail was pronounced dead an an autopsy is set to be conducted at Sparrow Hospital.  He was in the area on leave to attend a wedding.

McGrail is survived by his wife and infant child.  The family is asking for privacy at this time.
