NEW YORK (WKZO)- The Detroit Tigers used home runs to power their way past the New York Mets tonight en route to a 6-1 win victory. Torii Hunter started the scoring early hitting a solo home run in the top of first inning, his 14th of the year, to give the Tigers an early 1-0 lead.
The Mets quickly tied the game in the bottom of the first, but Detroit opened up the game in the second inning. Hunter hit a ground-rule to score Omar Infante. Then Migual Cabrera stepped up to the plate and hit the first pitch Daisuke Matsuzaka threw to him out of the park for a three run home run to give the Tigers a 5-1 lead. It was Cabrera's 41st home run of the season. Austin Jackson added the final run of the game on a solo home run in the seventh inning, his 11th of the season.
The Tigers pitching staff did the rest of the work. Doug Fister (11-6) picked up the win going 6 1/3 giving up one run on eight hits while striking out four and walking two. Drew Smyly, Jose Veras, and Bruce Rondon finished it off for the Tigers.
Detroit is back in action tomorrow against the New York Mets. This game will feature the two starters from the All-Star game, Max Scherzer (18-1 2.82 ERA) vs. Matt Harvey (9-4 2.25 ERA). Broadcast time tomorrow is 3:40 pm on AM 590 WKZO. First pitch is slated for 4:05 pm.
