KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Baseball is set to return to Mayors' Riverfront Park in Kalamazoo. The announcement of what Kalamazoo's new baseball team will be named has been delayed from August until sometime in October.
A new five-year contract with the Northwoods League will allow for a Kalamazoo-based team that will play at Homer Stryker Field starting in 2014. The delay is intended to allow for a contest to name the new team that will be unveiled at an event in mid-to-late October, along with the team's logo, a visit by league representatives, and the introduction of a new team manager.
Northwoods League will be paying the city of Kalamazoo a 35-thousand dollar fee to use the field for 35 games, 15 practices and field maintenance. Those fees will cover all costs associated with having the team in Kalamazoo, so having a new team should not take up any taxpayer money.
