Senator Rick Jones feels the need for speed on every Michigan road where the limit is set too low

UNDATED (WKZO) -- Police deny the existence of speed traps, sometimes they are being honest, some times they are not.

Retired Detroit Officer Kurt Scarloon says it’s true, some communities will set up speed traps just to generate revenue for a community.

He said he would some day go public with the information and now he has.

State Senator Rick Jones is proposing legislation that would require that communities have their roads studied and speed limits set scientifically by State Troopers who are trained to do those studies.

That may mean raising the limit on freeways from 70 to 75 or even 80 in the Upper Peninsula.

The worst example of a speed trap may be Henderson, Louisiana where the tickets handed out at the bottom of a bridge generated over 2-million a year, 80% of the community’s revenue. The Chief of Police has been charged with giving officers kickbacks for writing tickets.
