WEXFORD COUNTY (WKZO) -- The 12-year-old girl who survived that bear attack in Wexford County last week is now attracting national network attention with her story.

Abigail Wetherall was jogging on a trail near her Grandfather’s home when she spotted the bear and tried to outrun it. She was clawed a few times.

She says she played dead, because she heard that’s what you should do and it worked, until she tried running away a second time.

After she was knocked down a second time she tried a different strategy, making friends. She tried to pet it, which she says didn’t work at all and she says the bear really clawed her.

The bear finally ran off when a neighbor fired a gun to scare it away.

She suffered deep gashes on her legs and back but was released from the hospital Sunday.

DNR officials think they may have killed the black bear that attacked her. It was wounded Sunday by a man who felt threatened about two miles from the spot where the girl was mauled.

They will test hair samples to see if it was the same bear that attacked the girl, and run tests for communicable diseases to determine if she will need additional shots.
