KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Kalamazoo County’s Dive Team recovered the body of a 35-year-old Kent County man who fell off a fishing boat in Gull Lake and apparently drowned Saturday mid-morning.
Deputies say the man and a woman had used a public access point to launch their boat and they were making their way into the lake when the boat suddenly lurched and witnesses say they were both thrown into the water.
She was able to tread water until other boaters came to her rescue, but the man was not.
The couple wasn’t wearing life jackets. Divers found his body just before 4 p.m. It’s being investigated.
The name of the victim has not been released.
The National Safe Boating Council says with the summer season waning and Labor Day weekend a busy time for people who want to enjoy their boats one last time for the season, its important that they remember to wear their life jackets.
The U.S. Coast Guard says 85% of drowning victims in recreational boating accidents last year, died because they were not wearing life preservers.
