KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- The U.S.T.A.’s have wrapped up for another year with a couple of special victories. For the first time in the tourney’s 71-year-history, an unseeded player has come out of no where to win the tournament.
Collin Altamirano of Yuba City, California cut through the competition in the upper division like a knife, easily beating the #1 seed in the semi-final and then overpowering Jerad Donaldson in the finals. He gets an automatic bid to the U.S. Open.
In the 16-year-old division, Tommy Paul of Florida beat training partner and tourney roommate Jake Devine in the finals.
There was a very special win for Kalamazoo fans at this year’s Tourney. Kalamazoo’s Paul Oosterbaan won the 18-doubles with partner Ronnie Schneider Saturday. They will also be going to the U.S. Open.
