New York, NY (WKZO) – The Tigers 12 game winning streak is over after falling to the New York Yankees 4-3 in 10 innings.
Brett Gardner’s bases loaded single in the bottom of the 10th scored the game winning run but the game could have been over much earlier than that.
With a runner on and down 3-1 with two outs in the top of the ninth inning Miguel Cabrera blasted a 2-2 pitch to center field for his 34th home run off of Marina Rivera to tie the game and force extra innings.
Ivan Nova made the start for the Yankees and shut down the Tigers over seven innings, allowing just one run on an RBI single to Cabrera in the seventh inning. Nova struck out seven Tigers and allowed just one walk and gave up eight hits.
Rick Porcello started for the Tigers and surrendered three runs in five innings, his shortest outing since June 25th.
Austin Jackson had four hits; three of them doubles, and scored two runs.
Ichiro Suzuki had three hits for the Yankees and Alex Rodriguez was 0-4 with three strikeouts in his home 2013 home debut.
The Tigers look to get back to their winning ways on Saturday afternoon in the middle game of their three game set at Yankee Stadium. Anibal Sanchez (9-7, 2.58 ERA) takes the mound for Detroit against the Yankees Phil Hughes (4-10, 4.87). First pitch is set for 1:05.
