Detroit, MI (WKZO) – In his last outing exactly a week ago, Rick Porcello couldn't last a full inning as he allowed 9 runs – all earned – in 2/3 of an inning against the Angels. His next start was much better. Porcello allowed three runs, all in the third inning, while lasting 6 1/3 innings, striking out five and recording the win as the Tigers have now won back to back games against the Braves, defeating them 7-4 on Saturday afternoon.
Omar Infante drove in three and had three hits including his first home run of the season, a two run shot in the fourth inning, giving the Tigers a 5-3 lead. Infante also doubled in the eighth, knocking in Don Kelly for the Tigers sixth run and scored the Tigers final run on a single from Miguel Cabrera.
Braves starter Kris Medlen gave up five runs on 10 hits in only 5 1/3 innings. Medlen entered Saturday’s game with the lowest ERA in the big leagues since the 2012 All Star Game.
Miguel Cabrera extended his hit streak to 11 games with two hits, including a single in the third to tie the game, scoring Austin Jackson. Jackson went 2 for 2 with two walks. Cabrera’s two RBIs give him 23 on the season.
Jose Valverde struck out two in the ninth to record his second save of the year.
*In the second inning, Jhonny Peralta hit his second home run of the season on a hanging breaking ball, blasting it into the left field seats at Comerica Park, putting the Tigers up 2-0.
*Alex Avila threw out Justin Upton attempting to steal second in the third inning after he reached on a walk.
* Drew Smyly replaced Porcello in the seventh with one out and struck out both batters he faced.
*Don Kelly pinch hit for Matt Tuiasosopo in the eighth and hit a double, his first extra-base hit since July 2012.
*After walking on four straight pitches in the first inning, Austin Jackson was picked off first by Medlen.
*Porcello gave up all three runs in the third when seven Braves consecutively reached base.
*Justin Upton hit his 12th homerun of the year, a solo shot, off Joaquin Benoit in the eighth inning, trimming the Tigers lead to 5-4
Game Notes: All nine Tigers’ starters reached base…Matt Tuiasosopo started in left field for the second consecutive game after his five RBI performance on Friday night. Tuiasosopo went 1 for 3…Prince Fielder received a day off from the field as Victor Martinez started at first while Fielder was the DH…Before Saturday, the Braves were 15-0 in games in which they hit a home run…Tigers and Braves wrap up their three game series on Sunday with Doug Fister (3-0, 2.00 ERA) getting the start for Detroit vs. Atlanta lefty Mike Minor (3-1, 1.80).
