Detroit, MI (WKZO) – Friday night was a historical evening at Comerica Park. In the 113 years of Detroit Tiger baseball no pitcher had ever struck out more than 16. Friday night Anibal Sanchez struck out 17 as the Tigers shutout the Atlanta Braves 10-0.

Sanchez had never fanned more than 12 in game but had hit that mark by the sixth inning. He finished even stronger, striking out five of the last six Braves batter he faced in the seventh and eighth inning to break the mark of 16 set by Mickey Lolich who did it twice.

The Tigers offense provided enough punch with four runs in the third and six in the fourth as they batted around in both innings. The Tigers reached double figures in run total for the third time this season and this was their first shutout of the season.

Matt Tuiasosopo hit his first home run as a Tiger and drove in five runs. Victor Martinez and Torii Hunter each had three hits.

Bruce Rondon recorded his first career strikeout in the ninth inning as his fastball reached 100mph numerous times.
