BATTLE CREEK (WKZO) -- Officer William Gensch was scheduled to go on trial today for driving drunk and reckless driving, but instead he has entered a no-contest plea in a deal with prosecutors to a lesser charge, a misdemeanor that may permit him to hold onto his job.

Last July 31st, he smashed up Officer Jennifer Appl’s car, after driving over 110 MPH, taking out several mail boxes and a road sign along West Michigan Avenue in Bedford Township.

The Lieutenant on duty drove them home, failing to take proper alcohol tests. He was subsequently demoted. The lack of those alcohol tests delayed and nearly scuttled the prosecution.

Gensch was suspended for 20 days last year.

This plea could cost him a fine and a suspended license.
