PORTAGE (WKZO) -- A suspected car thief caused a traffic disruption for a while this morning at Oakland and I-94 after he led police on a high speed chase across two counties.
The suspect refused to pull over after he was spotted by Van Buren County Deputies at about 4:40 this morning near Mattawan.
The chase continued at speeds of up to 100MPH all the way into KalamazooCounty, ending abruptly when the man pulled his stolen Chevy Impala off the highway at Oakland drive and crashed into a fire hydrant. By that time, cars from five other police agencies had joined the chase.
He jumped out of the car and fled on foot. It closed Oakland for a couple of hours while they searched for him, but they were able to reopen the commuter route before morning drive.
He was eventually tracked down and captured.
The man is reportedly being held in the Van Buren County jail for car theft and fleeing and eluding and several other charges.
