KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- The YMCA of Greater Kalamazoo has received a grant to implement a new summer pilot program this year. The Y's Steve Springsdorf says that it's designed to help at-risk kids stay brushed up on their reading skills during the summer, when they usually tend to lose some ground.
The Summer Learning Loss Prevention Program will target first and second graders in the Kalamazoo School District. It'll involve teachers being hired to give the children reading lessons in the morning, and enrichment programs in the afternoon.
KPS will identify the students who should be targeted for it.
