Michigan Attorney General Schuette attempts to block dredging funding

LANSING (WKZO) -- Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette is throwing a wet blanket on harbor dredging projects statewide.

In an opinion issued this week, Schuette says Michigan's Natural Resources Trust Fund cannot be used to pay for "maintenance dredging projects" as directed in March by the state Legislature.  Governor Snyder signed legislation in March to spend money from both the general fund and the Michigan State Waterways Fund for emergency dredging projects.

Water levels on Lakes Michigan and Huron have been at historically-low levels this past winter, and in many cases, harbors have been closed.
