Seattle, WA (WKZO) – Brayan Pena drove in the game winning run and denied Justin Smoak the chance to tie the game, holding onto the ball as he was run over at home, ending the 14 inning marathon game and giving the Tigers their fourth straight win 2-1 over Seattle on Wednesday night.

Pena grounded out with no one down with the bases loaded in the 14th inning scoring the game winning run.

Max Scherzer had 12 strikeouts in eight innings. The Tigers bullpen pitched six scoreless innings. Drew Smyly got the win and Joaquin Benoit recorded his first save since July 2012.

The Tigers tied a team record with 21 strikeouts with Prince Fielder fanning a career high five times, while Austin Jackson K’d four times and Jhonny Peralta and Pena with three strikeouts apiece.

Tigers and Mariners are back at it on Thursday afternoon. Justin Verlander (2-1, 1.96 ERA) gets the start for Detroit. Seattle will start Hisashi Iwakuma (2-0, 2.18)
