WMU psychology students get training in autism behavioral therapy

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Experts say that the best way to address autism is through behavior therapy...and some might be glad to know that Western Michigan University's psychology department trains students in just that field.

Doctor Wayne Fuqua is chair of the department, and says that because so many resources now exist for parents of autistic children, WMU students can head out into the field and get direct training with autism. They learn hands-on, with the supervision of a doctor, volunteer with an existing support program, or professor.

Fuqua also says that recent changes to Michigan law requiring autism treatment to be covered by health insurance mean that more WMU behavioral therapy students are staying in the region when they graduate.
