DETROIT, MI (WKZO) – A nagging heel injury has led legendary Detroit Lions kicker Jason Hanson to hang up his cleats after 21 seasons in the NFL.

The soon-to-be 43 year-old made the announcement today, telling reporters “It’s time,” adding, “I gave serious thought and consideration to playing in 2013. While the determination and willpower are still there, the wear and tear on my body, especially the issues I had and still have with my heel convinced me that it’s time to retire.”

Hanson was selected in the second round of the 1992 NFL draft by the Lions from Washington State University. He played his entire professional career in Detroit, playing in a record 327 games with one team.

Hanson sits only behind Morton Andersen and Gary Anderson on the NFL all-time scoring list with 2,150 points. He converted 82.4 percent of his field goals in his career, hitting 495 of 601 attempts.

The team will hold an official press conference next Tuesday. David Akers was reportedly hosted by the Lions, but was not signed. Other free agent options include Lawrence Tynes, Olindo Mare and Shayne Graham among others.
