Army Corps of Engineers looks at low Great Lakes water levels

The Great Lakes
The Great Lakes

DETROIT (WKZO) -- The Army Corps of Engineers is studying the effect of low Great Lakes water levels on the shipping industry, and says that every time a freighter has to carry less cargo because of low water levels, consumers lose.

Chief of Hydraulics and Hydrology with the Corps in Detroit John Allis says that's happened quite a bit lately, with shipperes light loading, and just having to make more trips.

He says levels on Lakes Michigan and Huron have bit especially low the last few years, and Lake Michigan has actually hit record lows. The problem is that there hasn't been enough snow during the winter, or rain during the summers....and Allis says it would take a very long period with unusually high precipitation to correct the issue.
