ALLEGAN (WKZO) -- Allegan-based drug maker Perrigo continues to expand. Perrigo announced this week its acquisition of Velcera, a private company that makes products related to pet health. The company paid for the Pennsylvania-based company with 160-million dollars up front in cash.
Perrigo makes a number of generic pharmaceuticals and over-the-counter drugs, and the purchase of Velcera will have them marketing over-the-counter products for animals. That includes a number of products typically sold only by veterinarians.
Retail sales of the company's PetArmor brand of flea and tick-fighting products alone broke 100-million dollars last year after being on the market for less than two years.
