DETROIT (WKZO) -- The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan is suing the state in federal court over the "citizenship checkbox" on voter registration forms.
CLU Michigan executive director Kary Moss argues the boxes are unconstitutional and a violation of both state and federal law. Moss says Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson has "thumbed her nose at the electorate and flouted the very laws she was elected to uphold."
The checkboxes are meant to cut down on voter fraud by preventing non-U.S. citizens from registering to vote.
