KALAMAZOO (WKZO) – In front of an ecstatic home crowd at Waldo Stadium, Western Michigan’s offense dominated from start to finish, downing the Eastern Illinois Panthers 52-21.

Senior quarterback Alex Carder found a rhythm with his receivers, finishing 29 of 40 for 364 yards and 5 touchdowns. Junior quarterback Tyler Van Tubbergen took over in the final frame, completing 4 of 6 passing for 38 yards. The Bronco offense totaled 631 yards.
Western Michigan opened the scoring in the first quarter on a Daniel Braverman 9 yard run. The Panthers answered twice in the first quarter, but couldn’t keep up with Western’s offensive attack. Freshman wide receiver Jamie Wilson tallied a pair of touchdown receptions on 154 yards.
The Bronco defense continued their dominance, holding the Panthers to 344 total yards in the game, and no first downs in the second half. Justin Currie lead the way with eight tackles.
Western Michigan improves to 7-1 in home openers under Bill Cubit. They hit the road for their second tilt with the Big Ten in Minnesota. The Gophers were 44-7 winners over New Hampshire at home, lifting their record to 2-0.
