DETROIT (1660 THE FAN) – The Tigers needed Doug Fister to have a solid start on the mound if they were going to dodge a sweep at the hands of the Cleveland Indians.

Doug delivered, as the Tigers defeated the Indians 7-1 to avoid the sweep.

Fister went seven innings, giving up one run on four hits while striking out six.  Cleveland’s Ubaldo Jimenez had a solid start as well, going 7.1 innings while giving up four runs on six hits.

Miguel Cabrera gave Fister some wiggle room in the game, driving in three RBI, including a first-inning two-run home run. Prince Fielder’s home run preceded a two-run double as part of a five-run eighth inning.

Avisail Garcia was able to get another hit against Cleveland, moving his average to .500 since getting called up to Detroit.

The Tigers gain no ground on the Chicago White Sox, who defeated Minnesota earlier today.

Detroit heads to Los Angeles for a three-game series against the Angels starting Friday. Saturday’s game will feature two of the best pitchers in the American League, as Justin Verlander will face Jered Weaver for the first time since last year’s heated meeting between the two Cy Young candidates.

Friday’s game will see Max Scherzer on the mound looking for his 16th win against Ervin Santana. Dan Dickerson and Jim Price will have the call starting at 9:40 p.m. on 590 WKZO.
