Northern Illinois offense too much for Western Michigan to handle

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- The Western Michigan Broncos fell 48-34 to the Northern Illinois Huskies today.  This marks the third straight loss for the Broncos, they are now 3-6 on the season.  The first half of the game was a toss up, but the Huskies dominated the second half under the leadership of quarterback Jordan Lynch.

As the game started the Northern Illinois Huskies went with a short game approach.  They moved the ball down the field on their opening drive by dumping the ball off on short passes and a few quarterback draw calls.  Western had to respect the underneath passing and rush threat of NIU QB Jordan Lynch, as a result the Huskies finally threw the deep ball resulting in a 31 yard touchdown catch.  Western Michigan had a similar approach on their first drive.  Tyler Van Tubbergen continued to move the ball on short passes and then threw one up to Eric Monette for a 27 yard touchdown to tie the game.  Western wasn't done in the first as Eric Monette got his second touchdown reception, this time from 6 yards out.

Northern Illinois came back quickly in the second quarter.  They returned a Western Michigan punt 44 yards to the Broncos 39 yard line. After a 27 yard quarterback read option, and a 9 yard pass later the game was tied 14-14.  The quarter seemed to slow down until the last few minutes remained.  Western took the ball down the field and with just 1:32 remaining WMU went up 21-14 on an 8 yard touchdown run from Dareyon Chance.  The Huskies answered back driving down the field to set up a 54 yard field goal to end the half with Western leading 21-17.

The third quarter was all Huskies.  Jordan Lynch was finding all the open lanes and the WMU defense could no longer contain him.  Lynch lead his team back with a 2 yard touchdown run to regain the lead.  The score would stay the same until late in the third when a Tyler Van Tubbergen interception lead to a 20 yard Lynch touchdown run.

The Huskies were driving to start the 4th quarter and were already inside the WMU 20.  Lynch threw another touchdown pass, this time from 3 yards out to go up 38-21.  About halfway through the quarter, Lynch struck again with an 8 yard touchdown pass.  Jordan Lynch dominated the second half not only on the ground but also through the air.  The Broncos did come back to score two late touchdowns but the game was over at that point.  Western Michigan will take on the Central Michigan Chippewas Saturday at 1:00pm.
