U.S. Congressman Fred Upton on Tigers, his niece: "There's been a good reason we've been rooting for them all season long"

SAN FRANCISCO (WKZO) -- It’s baaaack.  Postseason Detroit Tigers baseball is back after a brief 5-day hiatus forced us to consider other things going on in our lives during the weekday evenings.  There is no need to worry about that petty every average day life stuff anymore…it’s time for the World Series and for the first time in what seems like longer than it is the Tigers are back in it.

The newly formed and overpowering Justin Verlander takes the hill tonight as the Tigers look to open a 1-0 lead on the San Francisco Giants.  This postseason he has been a well documented machine propelling the Tigers into an ALDS victory over the Oakland Athletics and a dominating game 3 victory over the New York Yankees.  In the past 5 days however there are some “off the field” conversations that have been had about Verlander’s personal life that have to have some in Michigan wondering…is the Upton relationship going to cause him problems in game 1?

Verlander is or isn’t dating supermodel Kate Upton.  He refuses to give specifics on the relationship and before game 1 has refused to neither confirm nor deny the relationship.  His Grandfather on the other hand has confirmed: “I heard he has been on dates with a Sports Illustrated girl” and continuing with “I saw a photo.  She’s beautiful.  They make a good-looking pair because he’s a good looking man, too.” This all according to gossip website Celebuzz which placed a call to Verlander’s grandfather and started asking questions.

WKZO morning show host Lori Moore began her discussion with 6th Congressional District U.S. Congressman Fred Upton asking him to “give her a scoop” about Justin Verlander and Kate Upon.  His response is here where Upton seems to shy away from the question but potentially answer it.

Supermodels aside it’s time for the World Series.  Players like Verlander, Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder are paid the big bucks for one simple reason…win the World Series for the city of Detroit, for Jim Leyland and for Tigers owner Mike Illitch.

Illitch took the Red Wings from nothing to greatness within 15 years of purchasing the organization.  The Red Wings are now the shining star over the past 20 years of the National Hockey League.  Illitch’s one remaining conquest is to bring a World Series to the city of Detroit for the first time since 1984.  Illitch purchased the Tigers in 1992 or roughly 20 years ago…that puts the organization 5 years behind the Red Wings in the popular amount of time it takes to win a Championship under Illitch.

Verlander’s starting game 1.  Miguel Cabrera is the Triple-Crown and potential MVP winner and Prince Fielder is in year 1 of a 214-million-dollar deal.  If there was ever a time for the Tigers to get it done and win this thing…it’s right now.

Tigers-Giants with coverage beginning at 7:40 on AM 590 WKZO.
