KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- The challenger in the race for Kalamazoo County Sheriff is no stranger to law enforcement. In fact, Ward Lawrence has worked in the sheriff's office for 18 years, working now as a patrol sergeant.
Lawrence tells WKZO he was encouraged by some of his coworkers to run.
"They wanted to see somebody in who was a stronger leader, who had vision for the department," Lawrence said.
He also said he does not agree with the way the department has been run under Sheriff Richard Fuller, especially as it relates to the budget.
"The first two years of this administration, over a million in overspending both years," Lawrence said. "I don't buy the excuses of how the overspending came or where it came from. I think we need to be responsible."
Prior to working in Kalamazoo County, Lawrence worked in law enforcement in Houston, Texas, Ferndale and Battle Creek, Michigan.
Both former sheriffs Tom Edmonds and Mike Anderson have endorsed Lawrence.
