KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- The Western Michigan Broncos swept the two night series against the Canisius Golden Griffins with a 2-1 victory.  All of the Broncos seemed to have a step on the Griffins, who looked fatigued at times through the game.  Even though Western seemed to have complete control of the game, Canisius goalie Tony Capobianco stood on his head to make the game close until the last few minutes on the third period.

As the first period started Western kept up a constant forecheck making the Griffins stick with a dump and chase mentality.  The Canisius team had trouble gaining the zone but when they were on the power play the team showed great puck control and tested Western Michigan goalie Frank Slubowki.  Frank showed some great positioning while short handed and some fancy glove work to keep Canisius off the board.  Despite Canisius's two powerplays and Western Michigans zero, the Broncos outshot the Griffins 10-7 in the scoreless period.

The second period was a series of penalties that slowed the game down.  The Broncos finally got several chances on the power play in this period but the Griffins put their bodies on the line blocking several shots and taking away the lanes.  Western finally got on the board with a beautiful wrist shot from Dan DeKeyser at 11:01 on the man advantage.  Just when Canisius broke out to a 3 on 1 rush and the tides seemed to be turning, Garrett Harr laid out and broke up the odd man rush.

Early in the third period Canisius was able to tie the game with a Duncan McKellar power play goal at 1:42.  That seemed to awaken the sleeping Broncos who had a series of odd man rushes.  The Broncos had a chance to take back the lead in the game with a Nolan Laporte penalty shot, but missed.  Then with 3:02 remaining in the game Trevor Elias found himself on a breakaway.  He made his deke and lit the lamp giving the Broncos the 2-1 victory.

Western Michigan will play their next game against Notre Dame Friday Nov 2nd in South Bend.
