KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Zombies were on the march in huge numbers in Downtown Kalamazoo Saturday night, thousands of zombies of every shape, kind, age and from every walk of life (or should we say walk of death) imaginable. While some may consider a huge mass of living dead lining up to be counted, an interesting metaphor for next month’s election, political symbolism was not their purpose last night.

The goal was to beat the Guinness Book of World Record’s all-time mark for Zombie gatherings, and organizer Osha Kelley says in the end, they fell about 100-zombies short of the 4,093 zombies they needed.

A last minute effort by a number of people standing around observing, to put on zombie make up and be counted, including Mayor Bobby Hopewell and this reporter fell just short.

Just getting thousands of zombies to line up and be counted was a considerable logistical achievement and quite contrary to the normal nature of zombies, when you think about it.

So the New Jersey record is safe for now, but Kelley says they will make another run at it again next year.

Next time they plan to build a day long festival around it, with bands and beer and other zombie treats.  Video with organizer Kelley and Kalamazoo Mayor Bobby Hopewell who says he was "out to get the Zombie vote" are featured above.
