KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Kalamazoo City Crews are cleaning up an unsanitary mess on Sage Street on the city’s far west side.
The Department of Public Services says an outside contractor ruptured a sewer pipe resulting in a spill that flowed about 500 feet down Sage and into a stormwater retention basin just south of Valley Ridge Drive. When it was flowing, it was discharging about 5-gallons of raw sewage a minute.
County Health officials are saying that residents should avoid the area and keep children and pets out of there until the area is assessed and remediated. . If contact is made with the raw sewage, they say clean and disinfect shoes, clothes, and skin thoroughly.
