OSHTEMO (WKZO) -- Kalamazoo County Sheriff's deputies and officers from several other agencies, including Kalamazoo Public Safety responded to a report of shots fired around 9 a.m. Friday in the woods on Stadium Drive near 8th Street, near the Pinehurst Townhomes complex.
Undersheriff Pali Matyas says a County Cruiser entering the area was shot at twice but was not damaged. The call went out and officers from several agencies, including Kalamazoo Public Safety responded.
They sealed off the area and sent K-9's into the woods to find the gunman. When he was spotted, the suspect put the gun to his head and shot himself.
They say the 27 year old did not live in the complex and they are not sure why he was in the area, why he opened fire or why he shot himself, but they are investigating.
As a precaution Prarie Ridge Elementary, which is nearby was locked down for a while.
