EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: WMU "breaks ground" on renovations for downtown medical school

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- They are calling it a "groundbreaking" at the Western Michigan University School of Medicine building in downtown Kalamazoo. Some might call it a "renovation-breaking", with plans set to prep the old Upjohn building at 300 Portage Street for students by the fall of 2014."The lower three floors have to be completely renovated," Dean Dr. Hal Jensen told WKZO. "Interior demolition has already started."

A ceremony Friday morning also revealed overall plans for the 330,000-square foot building now called the "W. E. Upjohn Campus," honoring the founder and chairman of the Upjohn Company. "We also have to put a small addition on one end of the building to accommodate our large lecture halls," Jensen said.

Watch above for exclusive video of the "groundbreaking" as well as following comments from Congressman Fred Upton and WMU President John Dunn.
