LANSING (WTVB) - Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson is accepting the ruling of a federal judge blocking her use of a check box on ballots to keep resident aliens from voting, but plans to take her case to the legislature. She is likely to once again be met by opposition from the Governor, who thinks it’s unnecessary. Governor Snyder has said all along that the checkbox could potentially cause more problems than it would solve.
A federal judge handed down the ruling last week, citing inconsistent enforcement and potential confusion at the polls. Johnson says she was disappointed by the judge's ruling and defended the citizenship question as a tool to make sure non-citizens aren't able to vote.
