Counterfeit Airbags Now Causing Concern

WASHINGTON D.C. (WTVB) - The next thing to worry about…counterfeit airbags. A warning is expected to be issued today about vehicle airbags that have been replaced after an accident.  Sources say the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will say that some may have counterfeit systems that won't function properly.  A Transportation Department officials says the advisory could affect less than one-tenth of one-percent of the vehicles on the road.  That's less than 240,000 cars and trucks.  Vehicle owners who have replaced their airbags within the last three years through an independent repair shop are at risk.  Also, people who purchased cars in which the airbags deployed in an accident and who don't know where the bags were replaced will also be advised to have their vehicles inspected.  The agency action is a customer advisory and not a formal recall.
