DECATUR (WKZO) -- Van Buren County Sheriff's deputies have rescued a black and white Great Dane mix dog that was found abandoned at a home in the 100-block of West St. Mary's Street in Decatur. They found the dog locked in a small crate with no food or water behind the home with no cover from the elements, forced to lay in its own urine and feces due to lack of space.
The dog was clearly in distress when they arrived, and they took him to the Van Buren County Animal Control facility. The dog is now being held at the facility in Hartford where he's receiving shelter, food, and care.
Apparently, the 24-year-old owner moved out of the property five days prior, leaving the dog behind. The suspect is currently being sought for possible charges.
