KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Except for the plywood boards over the windows, it’s hard to tell from the front that the La Mexicana Market on Portage Street was extensively damaged this weekend by a fire.
It’s easier to tell from the rear, where scorch marks are obvious above the windows and burned trash litters the parking lot. Firefighters report the damage inside is extensive and while the stock has all been destroyed, some of the equipment may be salvageable.
The owner says he was insured and hopes to rebuild. It took Public Safety 4 hours to extinguish the blaze which was reported by a passerby at about 6AM Sunday morning.
One firefighter suffered a minor injury. She was taken to Bronson Emergency where she was treated and released. The city’s Fire Marshal is looking for a cause.
