Detroit ace Justin Verlander, after giving up a lead off home run to Coco Crisp to start the game, held Oakland batters in check for 7 innings, striking out 11. Detroit's bullpen then took over, as Joaquin Benoit and Jose Valverde shut out the A's in the last two innings. The Tigers scored two runs by playing small ball, and Alex Avila hit a solo home run to finish the scoring.
