PORTAGE (WKZO) --Hunters in Portage have found the body of a woman tentatively identified as a missing person who disappeared this summer.
Portage Public Safety has ordered an autopsy and DNA tests to verify the identity, but they are reasonably sure that the badly decomposed body found in a swampy area in the Gourdneck State Game Preserve off the 34-hundred block of Vanderbilt belongs to Bonnie Merckley.
They say the clothes found on the body and the I.D. in the handbag belong to the missing woman, who vanished from an Adult Care Facility, about a mile away back on August 27th.
She was 55 and recovering from a traumatic brain injury. Searchers had been through that part of the preserve when she was first reported missing, but apparently missed spotting her body in the thick brush.
