KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- After last weeks 37-17 loss to Toledo, Western Michigan needed a MAC win against Massachusetts to build their confidence. The Minutemen came into the game 0-5, and reamin winless as the Broncos were victorious 52-14. The game boiled down to two key aspects, the improvement of Tyler Van Tubbergen at quarterback and the solid play on the defensive side of the ball.
Tyler Van Tubbergen has a rough outing last week but seemed to pick apart the Minutemen defense today. Instead of taking a lot of shots downfield, Van Tubbergen took the short check downs that the defense gave him. The Broncos quarterback was able to keep drives alive and move the ball, something he couldn't do last week. He finished the day throwing 23/28 for 283 yard 5 touchdowns and 1 interception.
Running back Antoin Scriven recorded 86 all purpose yards in the game, highlighted by a rushing and receiving touchdown.
On defense the Broncos came together making play after play. They ended the night with 4 sacks, 1 interception, and 3 forced fumbles. Western held Massachusetts to 218 total yards in the one sided matchup.
The Broncos will play next Sunday against the Ball State Cardinals at 3:00pm.
