BATTLE CREEK (WKZO) -- An 8-year-old girl who stopped breathing as a result of a house fire, and was revived by EMTs remains in extremely grave condition, and now investigators believe the fire was intentionally set.
A passerby, Steve Lafrinere noticed flames coming from the home on Young Street near Van Buren at about 2am Thursday. He called 911 and then alerted 12-year old Heaven and 15 year old Devin Johnson who managed to escape out a second story window.
But they were unable to reach the young girl, Karinna, who was in another second story bedroom. The first fire crews on the scene were able to mount a rescue and pull her out but she had stopped breathing. . She was resuscitated and sent to Bronson Hospital Burn Unit in Kalamazoo where she is listed in critical condition, suffering from smoke inhalation.
Investigators say the fire, which started on an enclosed porch appears suspicious. They are holding an ex-boyfriend of the children’s mother on an unrelated charge. They had had a domestic confrontation the night before.
They are estimating the damage to the home, which was totally destroyed at 60-thousand dollars.
