KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- The economic news continues to improve, adding to the holiday spirit this year and boosting everyone’s mood.

Housing sales are up in 18 of the nation’s 20-largest cities, including Detroit, where it rose 7.6% in October. They went up 47% in Kalamazoo County in October.

David Blitzer at Standard and Poor’s says it looks like the nation has finally turned the corner on Housing, and that should make everything better, giving a boost to consumer confidence and personal wealth.

The unemployment numbers also continued to fall in most south west Michigan counties in October standing well below the state and national averages. Kalamazoo County’s dropped below 6%.

Personal income in Michigan is rising steadily again, after taking a dip during the great recession. According to figures released by the U.S. Department of Commerce, a number of Michigan communities saw incomes rise in 2011 from the previous year, but some in West Michigan have yet to rebound to the level they were in 2007. Those counties include Allegan, Kalamazoo, and St. Joseph.

Van Buren has risen back to the same level, and the average earner in Branch, Ottawa and Calhoun counties is now making more than they were 5 years ago, before the economy took the big dive.

Kalamazoo County has the highest per-capita income in the region at $36-thousand.Ann Arbor topped the state for personal income at 40-thousand-800 dollars.
