KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Keeping schoolchildren from going hungry on the weekend when they do not have access to school lunches is the goal of the Backpack Buddies of Bethany Reformed Church.
Tuesday's Holiday Dish to Pass Potluck Pals event benefits the Backpack Buddies.
"Our project feeds 100 children at Washington Writers Academy," according to Judy Van Oosterum, Backpack Buddies coordinator.
She and others have worked out a backpack assembly system so that some Washington children are fed all weekend when they are not in school.
"They're put together at our church and are transported over to Washington," VanOosterum said. "They are distributed on Fridays."
Similar programs exist in other districts. The Potluck Pals event on Thursday (November 29) will benefit Generous Hands, a weekend food program for kids in the Vicksburg area.
