KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- More is now known about the victims in Sunday morning's unusual double crash on the U.S. 131 Business Loop. Three off-duty emergency medical technicians, Trevor Stuck, Brittany Despins and Kent Smith, were all riding in a car driven by 24-year-old Kari Braley when it went off the curve near North Westnedge and into the median and flipped over. Stuck was ejected from the car.
53-year old Bronson nurse Marykay MacQuarrie was headed home from work while Kalamazoo County Sergeant Laura Misner was just headed into work, and both stopped to lend assistance. That's when a second car went off the curve and plowed through the accident scene.
An autopsy is planned to determine if Stuck was already dead when he was hit by the second car, or whether it was the one that killed him. Despins and McQuarrie remain in critical condition. The other three are recovering from a variety of injuries. The driver of the second car, 22-year-old Margaret Robinson. of Kalamazoo, was not injured.
Michigan Department of Transportation officials are reviewing the design of the business loop for safety.
