KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- A sign on the door of the Rave Theatre Downtown reads that the theater will be closing permanently a week from Sunday on the evening of the 25th. The message on their answering machine confirms the planned closure.
This is news to Downtown Kalamazoo Incorporated, according to their spokesperson.
We haven’t been able to get in touch with anyone else to verify that, but there is news that the entire Rave Theatre chain and all of its assets has just been sold to Cinemark USA, one of the largest Motion Picture exhibitors in the world. That includes 32 multiplexes in 12 states representing 483 screens. They may be planning their own announcement.
Downtown Kalamazoo Inc. had said that they were told the theatre was planning to stay open through the New Year and in negotiations with another firm to take over the facility.
DKI spokesperson Vicki Kettner says that she spotted the sign attending a movie there Saturday evening and that it was inconsistent with what they were told was going to happen.
