FAIRBANKS, AK (WKZO) -- The Broncos were defeated 6-1 as they traveled to Fairbanks tonight against the Nanooks.  The 11:30pm start time obviously didn't help Western Michigan as the game ended near 2am back home.

In the first period both teams came out with a high level of energy that lead to a few scoring opportunities on both ends.  Western Michigan goaltender Frank Slubowski made several good stops, making 8 saves in the period to keep the game close.  The Broncos struggled to get the puck on net (4) as the Nanooks did a great job putting their bodies on the line to block shots.  At the 12:36 mark Alaska was able to get on the board when they had a 3 on 1 break and Nolan Huysmans netted his first career goal.  The Broncos did have a power play chance near the end of the period but were unable to register a single shot on the advantage.

The Broncos evened the game early in the second as Chase Balisy scored on the powerplay at the 4:02 mark.  From that point on the period belonged to the Nanooks who outshot the Broncos 14-3.  Andy Taranto and Kaare Odegard each added even strength goals to put Alaska up 3-1 going into the intermission.

Within 36 seconds of the third period starting Alaska had scored two more goals from the sticks of Chad Gehon and Nolan Huysmans to put the Nanooks up 5-1.  The period settled down with little action until Alaska netted yet another goal at 11:03 from Jarret Granberg for a 6-1 lead and the victory.

The Broncos will take on the Nanooks again Saturday night at 11:30pm.
