KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- The Broncos were defeated 29-23 in the last game of their season. The Broncos had a shot late but luck didn't land on their side.
The first quarter was all Eagles. Eastern Michigan scored on their first drive of the game at the 9:22 mark after driving right down the field. The drive was capped off by Dominique Sherrer rushing for the 3 yard touchdown. Western Michigan didn't have much issue moving the ball early but a big hit on Alex Carder forced a fumble and stopped the Bronco momentum. Later in the quarter, the Eagles struck again this time with 3:46 remaining. Tyler Benz found Donald Scott in the end zone for a 5 yard touchdown reception to give Eastern the 14-0 lead.
Western Michigan was driving to end the first quarter and found themselves in the red-zone to start the second. Alex Carder then found Blake Hammond at 14:55 for a 1 yard touchdown pass to put WMU on the board. The Eagles came back on their next possession driving to the WMU 4 yard line but were held to a 22 yard field goal, increasing their lead to 17-7. The Broncos then forced an Eagles turnover on downs late in the second quarter. It didn't take long for WMU to capitalize on the mistake as they scored on the very next play on a 25 yd TD pass from Alex Carder to Justin Collins bringing the score to 17-14 Eagles, which was the score going into halftime.
WMU wasted little time in the third quarter and on their first possession of the second half the Broncos were able to get into EMU territory leading to a Alex Haldeman 37 yard field goal to tie the game. The Eagles then marched right back down the field, setting up a 43 yard Dylan Mulder field goal to regain the lead. Late in the quarter the Eagles put together another scoring drive finished off by an 8 yard pass to Alex Gillett from Tyler Benz, but EMU missed the extra point, giving them a 26-17 lead going into the 4th quarter.
The action came to a standstill until about midway through the fourth quarter when Haldeman hit a 19 yard field goal, bringing the score to a 26-20 EMU with just 7:59 remaining. Eastern then drove down the field with great clock management. They ended their drive with a Mulder 34 yard field goal to make the score 29-20, bringing the contest to a two possession game with just 2:33 remaining. Western marched right back down the field and with just 49 seconds left, hit another field goal to make it a one possession game. On the onside kick attempt Western got a great bounce but the ball fell into the hands of the Eagles, sealing their 29-23 victory.
