GRAND RAPIDS (WKZO) -- Roy Schmidt will not be returning to the state House, due perhaps from the fallout surrounding a scandal in his last-minute party switch from Democrat to Republican.
Representative Schmidt lost to Democratic challenger Winnie Brinks in the 76th District state House seat. When he switched parties at the filing deadline, a staff member for House Speaker Jase Bolger also filed paperwork for a Democratic challenger who had agreed to not mount a campaign to ensure Schmidt's re-election.
A one-person grand jury has been convened in Lansing to investigate after the Kent County Prosecutor's office found no illegal activity.
