BATTLE CREEK (WKZO) -- Battle Creek’s Habitat for Humanity, an organization that helps low income families purchase homes may be looking for a home of their own after a fire destroyed a portion of their operation at 551 Michigan Avenue West.
The fire was reported at 12:43pm Sunday but they believe it began sometime before that because it was fully involved, with flames shooting through the roof when the first fire crews arrived.
Fire investigators are expected to look for the cause today. It appears to have started in a kitchen and dormitory area used to house volunteers who participate in building projects. The fire also damaged storage areas, where some of the inventory for their “Restore” operation was kept.
The Restore recycles and resells building materials and raises funds for the non-profit organization.
They currently have three homes under construction, in Battle Creek, Marshall and Bedford Township and those projects will continue, but future projects may be up in the air until they regroup.
